About Hitotoki Travel
Hitotoki Travel is a Japan-based luxury travel agency and destination management company (DMC) specializing exclusively in bespoke, tailor-made journeys throughout Japan. Founded in 2016, we design highly personalized itineraries for discerning travelers seeking turnkey rare, authentic, and exclusive access to Japanese culture — from private temple visits to encounters with master artisans.
Our programs seamlessly integrate airport meet-and-greet services, handpicked accommodations, private transfers, and train ticket arrangements, among many other tailored services. To date, we have curated over 1,000 bespoke journeys throughout Japan.
Yes. Hitotoki Travel is a fully licensed Japanese travel agency, holding official Japan Travel Agency License No. 3-470. This license ensures full compliance with Japanese travel regulations and provides clients with a high level of consumer protection. We are also a Founding Member of the Hospitality Industry Club of Japan (HICJ).
Hitotoki Travel has received seven consecutive nominations at the World Travel Awards from 2019 to 2025, recognizing our expertise in luxury travel to Japan and our consistent delivery of exceptional, tailor-made experiences for an international clientele.
In addition, Hitotoki has been recognized by various institutions, including international chambers of commerce in Japan, and has been featured across print media, podcasts, and video interviews.
Hitotoki Travel was founded by Alex Debs, who spent most of his life in Japan and brings deep, first-hand local knowledge to every itinerary. Our Japan-based team works directly with temples, artisans, hoteliers, and cultural institutions, allowing us to secure access and experiences that are rarely available through large international agencies.
Since its creation in 2016, Hitotoki Travel has successfully designed and operated over 1,000 bespoke journeys across Japan. Every itinerary is custom-designed from scratch based on each client's interests, travel style, and pace — ensuring that no two Hitotoki journeys are ever the same.
Pricing & Booking
Hitotoki Travel trips typically range from USD 1,000 to 2,500 per person per day, excluding international airfare. Pricing varies depending on travel season, accommodation level (luxury hotels or ryokans), trip length, and the level of exclusivity requested. This investment reflects a fully bespoke experience, designed and operated by a Japan-based luxury travel specialist.
Our pricing generally includes luxury hotel or ryokan accommodations, private English-speaking guides, all ground transportation within Japan, exclusive or privately arranged cultural experiences, and continuous on-trip support. International flights are not included, allowing clients full flexibility when booking their preferred airline and cabin class.
We recommend booking at least six months in advance, particularly for high-demand seasons such as cherry blossom season (March & April) and autumn foliage (October & November). Advanced planning allows us to secure highly sought-after accommodations, top guides, and exclusive experiences that require long-term coordination with temples, artisans, and cultural venues.
The process begins with an initial consultation to understand your travel style, interests, and priorities. We then create a detailed, tailor-made proposal with a quote. A 30% deposit is required to confirm the booking, with the remaining balance due 45 days prior to departure. Payments can be made by major credit card or wire transfer.
Trip Planning & Customization
Every Hitotoki trip begins with an in-depth consultation to understand your interests, travel style, and bucket-list aspirations. Whether your passions lie in Japanese cuisine, traditional arts, architecture, or nature, we design each day around your preferences while incorporating refined, lesser-known experiences made possible by our local network.
Absolutely. We specialize in designing meaningful journeys for honeymoons, milestone anniversaries, significant birthdays, and multi-generational family travel. From private ceremonies to exclusive cultural encounters and personalized surprises, we ensure each celebration feels deeply personal and unforgettable.
Hitotoki Travel focuses primarily on Japan's cultural and scenic heartland, including Tokyo, Hakone, Kyoto, Nara, Osaka, and Hiroshima. We also regularly incorporate carefully selected destinations such as Kanazawa, Takayama, Kagoshima and Yakushima as well as local towns and villages outside the large cities.
Rather than attempting to cover all of Japan, we concentrate on regions where we can offer deep expertise, trusted relationships, and a consistently high level of service.
We make every reasonable effort to accommodate dietary needs and have extensive experience addressing these considerations in Japan. However, Japan is a country where flexibility can be limited, and ingredients such as gluten, pork, and seafood are widely used.
We work closely with our partners to identify suitable solutions and communicate transparently about what is realistically possible.
We generally recommend 10 to 14 days to experience Japan in a meaningful and unhurried way, allowing time for both iconic highlights and deeper exploration. That said, we can also design impactful shorter itineraries of approximately 7 days for travelers with limited time.
We select accommodations that enhance the overall journey, including world-class luxury 4 and 5 stars hotels, refined ryokans with private onsen and boutique machiya-style properties. Each accommodation is personally vetted by our team to ensure it meets our standards for quality, comfort, and service.
Who Hitotoki Travel Is For
Hitotoki Travel is designed for discerning travelers who value depth, authenticity, and seamless execution. While we carefully include Japan's iconic highlights, we go beyond standard sightseeing by enriching classic routes with thoughtful pacing, private guidance, and meaningful cultural context. Our clients are typically curious, culturally minded travelers who appreciate expert planning, refined accommodations, and access to experiences that elevate even the most well-known destinations.
Yes. Many of our clients are first-time visitors to Japan who wish to experience the country in a refined, well-balanced way without feeling overwhelmed. Our tailored approach allows first-time travelers to explore Japan's highlights with confidence, while also discovering lesser-known experiences that add depth and context to their journey.
Absolutely. Repeat visitors often turn to Hitotoki to access deeper layers of Japan that are difficult to reach independently. Through long-standing relationships, we can introduce returning travelers to new regions, private cultural encounters, and exclusive experiences that transform a second or third visit into something truly distinct. As we reached our 10-years anniversary, we are thankful that a growing number of our Guests are repeat travelers.
Yes. We regularly design journeys for families and multi-generational groups, carefully balancing shared experiences with individual interests and comfort levels. Our itineraries take into account pacing, accommodation layout, transportation ease, and privacy to ensure a smooth and enriching experience for all ages.
Hitotoki Travel may not be the ideal choice for travelers seeking standardized group tours, budget-focused travel, or last-minute arrangements with extensive flexibility across all regions of Japan. Our approach prioritizes quality, access, and thoughtful planning, which naturally requires preparation time and an investment aligned with a high level of service and exclusivity. While we regularly arrange trips for families with younger children, most of our Guests children are over 6 years-old.
During Your Trip
Yes, all Hitotoki guides are fluent English speakers with deep expertise in Japanese culture, history, and contemporary life. Our guides are not just translators—they are cultural interpreters who unlock meaningful connections and behind-the-scenes access throughout your journey.
Throughout your journey, you benefit from dedicated on-the-ground support from our Japan-based team. We assist with coordination between services, practical questions, and necessary adjustments, ensuring your itinerary runs smoothly while respecting local constraints and availability.
When unexpected situations arise, such as weather conditions or transportation disruptions, our team works to adapt the itinerary in a thoughtful and realistic way. We prioritize safety, comfort, and continuity of the experience, while clearly communicating any necessary adjustments in line with local conditions.
Guide arrangements depend on the structure and regions of your itinerary. While a single guide may accompany you in certain locations, different licensed guides will be assigned as you move between regions. This approach ensures local expertise in each destination while maintaining continuity through careful coordination by our team.
Free time is entirely optional. While many clients appreciate a balanced itinerary that combines guided experiences with moments for personal exploration, we can also design fully guided days from start to finish if preferred. Our approach is flexible and tailored to your travel style, with detailed recommendations provided when free time is included and on-the-ground support available should you wish to add spontaneous activities.
We arrange all ground transportation including private vehicles with drivers, Green Car (Business class) shinkansen bullet train tickets, and domestic flights when needed. Transportation is seamlessly coordinated so you never worry about logistics or connections.
Yes. When luggage forwarding is appropriate, we coordinate with hotel concierges, and your guide can assist on-site as needed. Luggage transfers are a common practice in Japan and are arranged to ensure smooth travel between destinations, particularly when using trains as those sometimes do not have any space for large luggage.
Tipping is not customary in Japan and is never expected. Exceptional service is considered part of professional standards. That being said, guides and drivers are in contact with international guests who often tip them and would gracefully accept tip, although not expected.
Exclusive Experiences
Hitotoki focuses on thoughtfully curated daytime experiences that offer meaningful insight into Japanese culture, rather than a checklist of high-end reservations. Through long-standing local relationships, we can arrange private cultural encounters such as intimate tea ceremonies, hands-on culinary experiences, and, for select journeys, off-limits access to temples accompanied by monks or special performances. These experiences are designed to feel authentic, unhurried, and deeply connected to place.
In certain cases, yes. For travelers seeking a deeper level of cultural immersion, and depending on timing, location, and budget, we may be able to arrange private access to temples or sacred sites. This can include private visits, meditation sessions, or special experiences such as taiko performances held within temple grounds. Availability is limited and based on long-standing relationships, making these experiences exceptional rather than guaranteed.
Hitotoki's culinary experiences are primarily centered around exploration and local food culture. This may include guided ramen tastings, visits to fish markets, neighborhood food walks in areas such as Osaka or Togoshi-Ginza, private cooking classes, and carefully curated street-food experiences. While we can advise on notable restaurants, our focus is on immersive, informal encounters that reveal how and where locals truly eat.
