From getting a glimpse of the sea turtles on the island beach to a half-day kayaking experience in the island stunning environment.

Yakushima can be visited year-round, though each season has its character. Spring (March–May) brings fresh greenery and is ideal for hiking before summer humidity sets in. Summer (June–August) is lush and warm, and sea turtles come ashore to nest on Nagata Beach at night — a rare spectacle. Autumn (September–November) offers cooler temperatures and vivid forest colours. Winter (December–February) sees snow on the mountain peaks, creating a dramatic contrast with the subtropical coast. Note that Yakushima is one of Japan's rainiest places — the forest's magic comes from its rainfall, and misty days in the cedar forest are particularly atmospheric.

Yakushima is one of Japan's most ecologically remarkable islands. Its ancient cedar forest — home to trees over 1,000 years old, including the famous Jomon Sugi estimated at 2,170–7,200 years old — was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1993. The island's biodiversity is extraordinary: from subtropical beaches at sea level to alpine peaks above 1,900 metres, all within a few kilometres. It is also home to the Yakushima macaque and Yakushima deer, both subspecies found nowhere else on earth. The island's otherworldly moss-covered ravines inspired Hayao Miyazaki's animated film Princess Mononoke.

Yakushima is accessible by air and sea from Kyushu. The fastest option is a short flight from Kagoshima Airport (approx. 35 minutes) to Yakushima Airport. Alternatively, high-speed ferries (Toppy and Rocket) connect Kagoshima port to Miyanoura in approximately 2 hours, with slower car ferries available as well. Kagoshima itself is easily reached from Tokyo or Osaka by shinkansen.
