Okinawa Beach Break

Okinawa is Japan's southernmost archipelago — a subtropical paradise spanning more than 160 islands, where turquoise water meets white coral sand and a culture entirely its own. For centuries these islands formed the heart of the independent Ryukyu Kingdom, a seafaring civilization that traded with China, Korea, and Southeast Asia, leaving behind an architecture, cuisine, and spirit distinct from mainland Japan.

Far from the crowds of Tokyo or Kyoto, Okinawa offers something rarer: stillness. The outer islands — Taketomi, Iriomote, and the Yaeyama archipelago — are where time moves differently, where traditional villages have barely changed in centuries, and where the sea remains one of the clearest in Japan.

PARADISIAC & TRADITIONAL

Relish a relaxing stay at the Hoshinoya Taketomi with its Japanese tatami rooms, private garden and fresh tropical fruits.

Discover a large choice of activities: water-buffalo tour of the island, snorkelling, diving and much more.

Okinawa enjoys a subtropical climate and can be visited year-round. The most popular season is spring (March–May), when the water warms up, crowds are smaller than summer, and the lush greenery is at its most vivid. Summer (June–August) is warm and ideal for diving and snorkelling, though typhoon season runs through October. Autumn (September–November) sees fewer visitors and pleasant temperatures. Winter (December–February) is mild by Japanese standards — around 17–20°C — making it a perfect escape from the cold of mainland Japan or Europe.

The outer islands of the Ryukyu Archipelago offer some of Japan's most distinctive experiences. Taketomi Island is a tiny coral isle where traditional red-roofed houses line sandy lanes and water-buffalo carts are still the main transport — it is one of the best-preserved Ryukyuan villages in Japan. Iriomote Island, largely covered by UNESCO-listed subtropical jungle, is ideal for mangrove kayaking, river trekking, and spotting the rare Iriomote wildcat. The surrounding waters host some of Japan's most pristine coral reefs, popular with divers and snorkellers.

Okinawa's main airport, Naha Airport, is served by direct flights from Tokyo (Haneda or Narita) in approximately 2h30. International flights connect via Tokyo or Osaka. From Naha, Taketomi and the Yaeyama Islands are reached by ferry or small plane from Ishigaki Airport. Inter-island connections by ferry or small plane are straightforward and well-served, particularly between Ishigaki and the surrounding Yaeyama Islands.
